Mansiding Emergency Beam Repair

Mansiding Road Over US-127, Michigan

Summary

The Mansiding Road overpass located over US-127 was severely damaged by a high-load hit. The concrete beam that supports Mansiding Road sustained most of the damage and required an emergency repair.

Extensive repairs to the concrete beam included removing damaged concrete, forming, and pumping new concrete. Smith’s was chosen to perform a structural crack repair, carbon fiber reinforcement, and concrete surface coating as well.

A structural crack repair was performed by injecting epoxy into 180 lineal feet of cracks throughout the beam. Smith’s was able to perform work in freezing conditions by building a heated enclosure around the overpass. This gave the ability to bring the temperature up to the required working ranges for the epoxy injection, carbon fiber repair, and concrete surface coatings.

Crews wrapped the damaged beams with carbon fiber high-strength cloth to reinforce the damaged beam. Over 220 square feet of BASF MasterBrace FIB (MBrace CF130) carbon fiber cloth was used to reinforce the beam. Carbon fiber reinforcement restored the structural capacity and allowed for a quick return to service.

The damaged beam and carbon fiber wrap were then coated with a concrete texture coating, which protected the carbon fiber from the elements and gave the beam and bridge one consistent color.

Highlights

  • Emergency structural concrete repairs
  • Heated enclosure was built to protect work area from the elements
  • Epoxy crack injection
  • Carbon fiber reinforcement
  • Concrete Surface coating over all work performed
